about

Recently, for the first time ever, I performed in AUS/NZ. Prior to, I didn’t know what to expect, but it certainly wasn’t bad to say the least. It’s the furthest I’ve been from the states since I was a kid, so needless to say, I was shocked by the different culture(s) and environment. Somehow at the same time, it wasn’t far from what I’m familiar with. Utah’s filled with some of the kindest folks, and in relation to that, I didn’t encounter any hint of animosity from anyone— I guess that was the most familiar part of it all. Even amongst peers, whom I respect fully, were nothing but embracing and a joy to be around, namely; Swiss/Tree, BLKB3RRY, TTWFO band, Havea, Ron Moala, Donny Mahanga, HolyBoyDom, Ponifasio, JP, Wayno, DJ Spyce, DJ Peter Gunz, LecczBeatz and the list goes on. As far as I’ve been from any of them in distance, they could’ve easily been close friends of mine with how cohesively the acquaintances went. I learned much from each of them, even in the little time there— big S/O to all these brethren for their love, kindness and of course talent.

I learned a lot about myself during the trip. Mostly, that I have a really bad case of Imposter Syndrome, and if you don’t know what that is, here’s the definition: The psychological pattern of doubting one's accomplishments and fearing being exposed as a “fraud”. I’d hate to seem ungrateful for all that I’ve gained (and will gain) as an artist, but it’s extremely hard for me to accept that there are real souls out there who listen to my work. And with that, it’s not often I interact with any of you, let alone release music for you as often as I should. This self-diagnosis has led to much missed opportunities, I have no doubt. However, now that I’m more aware, I believe I can get out of my own way haha..

Mike Tyson says “you are nothing without discipline”, and if there’s one thing I’ve struggled with throughout my life, it’s just that. That struggle may or may not contribute to the Imposter Syndrome, but either way, mastering the mind is something I’m in dire need of. The creative within in myself is chaotic, adventurous, and constantly hungry. When you have nothing to counter balance such traits, it’s easy to lead a life that’s dysfunctional and completely unpredictable. At this point of my life, I’ve learned that the more control one has over his/her own habits, the more fulfilled and free that person is. Ironically, freedom IS discipline.

I say all that to say, this latest song I have is called “Temptation”. It’s less than 3 minutes long, so it ain’t the deepest of songs in that regard. The track is sort of satire with a bit of an edge, but it’s more or less about a man’s struggle in keeping himself an honest man. The beauty of this concept is that the temptation itself is interchangeable. We all have vices that knock and wait at our doors and it’s easy to entertain the thought of letting them in. I think this is more than relatable to folks of every background, but I might be wrong. Anyway, whether it’s cake or cake laced with crack, you can agree that a level of control is needed to fight the urge. The ending is pretty much left open for interpretation, so YOU as the listener can determine for yourself what that end will be. Lastly, I’ll add the fact that I referenced “Just My Imagination” by The Temptations, which I thought would bring this whole thing back, full circle.

There it is, I hope you enjoy. Much love, my dear friends. ’Til next time, stay well. BLESS, BLESS!

lyrics

Ooo.. Baby don’t tempt me
I got a good woman at home and she’s expecting me
And I’m runnin’ low on self control
So baby don’t—

Right one, wrong time
It’s hard to hold it together, but I’m tryin’
By the way, if you don’t know me, girl I’m
S-I-O-N-E

I’m just a man
And a man’s only flesh and bone
A woman like yourself can put a man through hell
Then just let him go
Don’t act like you don’t know

Baby please don’t tempt me
Thinkin’ ‘bout touchin’, but don’t let me
Lord give me strength and don’t condemn me
One wrong move and shawty gon’ send me
I’ve got too much to lose,
Baby please don’t tempt me

I’ve got sunshine,
But I’m overdue for rain
You see me doin’ well
As far as you can tell
Then out went all your shame
But for you it’s just a game

You gettin’ kinda close
Backin’ up on me like ye ain’t notice
Sendin’ “hey” at 2 in the mornin’
Left ya on read, ‘cause I ain’t no novice

No lie you pretty like a rose
And I ain’t no saint like Moses
She determined for a Bull like DeRozan
Don’t tempt me, girl that’s warnin’— oh

Baby please don’t tempt me
Yeauh
Thinkin’ ‘bout touchin’, but don’t let me
Lord give me strength and don’t condemn me
One wrong move and shawty gon’ send me
I’ve got too much to lose,
Baby don’t tempt me
